Legendary labyrinth of Knossos

Palace in red

My Greek Island holiday certainly wasn’t the typical idyllic sun, sea and surf experience. I went in the middle of winter so beach holidays were out of the question. Instead, I headed to the island of Crete, drawn by the legend of the Minotaur.

The story goes that the Palace of Knossos, home of the ancient Minoan civilization, was home to a half-man, half-bull, known as a Minotaur. Every nine years, Athens was required to send seven strapping young men and seven maidens as a sacrifice to the Minotaur. These unfortunate people were to be used as prey for the beast in the labyrinths beneath the castle. One year, Prince Theseus volunteered to be one of the seven youths and successfully killed the Minotaur. However, on the way home, he forgot to raise the white sails that were a symbol of his victory. Instead, when his father, King Aegean, saw the black sails on the ship, he was driven mad with misery and leaped to his death in the sea that now bears his name.

Today, the grand palace is in ruins but is still remarkably well preserved, with bright frescoes adorning the walls and various urns and other artifacts dotted around the vast complex.
