RFID credit cards: A security threat?

Credit Card Debt

I remember when I got my first RFID-enabled credit card. It was the American Express Starwoods Preferred Guest card, which I absolutely loved because every dollar I spent went towards a free hotel night in one of the Starwood chain’s generally excellent hotels. I had just started working in New York and my client’s food court was specially equipped to accept the American Express RFID cards. I used to impatiently wait for all the customers in front of me to dig through their purses for the right change, and then feel so smug when all I had to do was flash my card at the reader to pay for my lunch. It was fast, convenient, and a no-brainer. Security issues didn’t even cross my mind.

Until I found out that stealing a credit card number from an RFID-enabled card was a simple matter having the right hand-held reader aimed at the unsuspecting victim’s bag or wallet. These scanners can pick up the card owner’s name, card number and expiry date, all without the card leaving the wallet.

Are RFID cards safe? You decide.
