How to avoid unwanted roaming charges when travelling with your iPhone

Part of what makes an iPhone so fun is all the cool apps. Unfortunately, many of these apps require a data connection, which gets frustrating – and expensive! – when travelling internationally. It gets particularly annoying when a lot of the apps are especially useful for travellers, Google Maps and currency exchange apps just to name a few. Sometimes I think smartphone companies, Apple included, have some sort of secret profit sharing deal with the cellphone service providers – we’ll make them use loads of data if you share some of the profits with us *evil laugh*
Fortunately, there are several ways to keep roaming costs low or non-existent, even if you’re an iPhone junkie. From switching your phone to airplane mode (I know this basically kills 90% of the fun but when you’re on a budget, you gotta do what you gotta do…) to unlocking the phone and getting a local sim card, you can take steps so that you will never pay an exorbitant roaming bill again.
