Can TripAdvisor ratings be trusted?

Missed the plane?

The UK’s Daily Mail reports that four in five travellers check review sites before booking a hotel and the most popular of these sites is TripAdvisor. The site just reached its 50 millionth review, and has more than 40 million unique users every month. But just how believable are their reviews?

Unfortunately, there are several ways to game the system, and hotel owners can and do try all the tricks in the book, including posting fake reviews, whether it is to praise their own hotel or to damage a rival’s reputation. Some establishments have also been known to bribe guests for good reviews.

Can TripAdvisor ratings be trusted? Only as far as you would trust a stranger’s review.
