Review sites have sprung up all over the internet, with the most popular including TripAdvisor, Yelp and the like. But with all these sites having an open forum model where anyone can post any review, how trustworthy are the sites?

For TripAdvisor at least, the answer is not very. Hotels have been accused of posting fake reviews to boost their ratings and to lower their competitors’. Some establishments have even bribed guests to write good reviews in exchange for lower rates. 

If you’re going to use these sites, you’d better learn how to spot a fake review. A Cornell University study found that humans are notoriously bad at spotting fake reviews. But with these simple tips, you can learn how to spot fakes like a pro.
