Penne Cole's thoughts on food, travel and more
It is Christmas Eve and a lovely winter’s day. My travel companions and I are in Porto – one of my classmates’ family has generously invited us to spend Christmas with them. Later in the day, we are to join them for the Christmas feast – and what a feast it was! – but for the moment, we are lingering by the banks of the Rio Douro, enjoying the last rays of the sun and watching the lights of the town wink on one by one.
Just ahead of us, two boats are at anchor, floating peacefully with their cargo of port barrels securely lashed down. For me, this shot perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the city.

If you’re in Porto, you must try the francesinha – hands down one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.
