Penne Cole's thoughts on food, travel and more
In these days of soaring unemployment, I’m grateful that I have a job that allows me to work from home.
Before this craziness started, working from home was taboo in my line of work. As a consultant, clients value face time, and there’s a psychological barrier that makes me feel like the clients don’t get value for money if they don’t see you. Whether that’s true or just me I’ll never know.
But these days, everyone is working from home. My company has even implemented a blanket 20% reduction in working hours (with corresponding reduction in pay!), so everyone is working part time, and not everyone’s day off lines up. That means we’ve all had to come up with new ways of working.
We’ve all embraced video conferencing, virtual whiteboarding sessions, collaborative document editing, and more, all while making sure not to impinge on colleague’s non-working days. When this first started, people were shy about showing up on camera in their homes, in their casual wear. Nowadays, people have lost their inhibitions. Cameras are freely switched on; there are beards galore and more than a few Hawaiian shirts. And I’m loving the impromptu shots of people’s pets in the background.
While I am going a little stir crazy being at home all the time, I am looking forward to the day when everything returns to normal, but we are all more accepting of remote working and flexible working.
So today, I’m grateful for these crazy times that have made new ways of working mainstream.
What are you grateful for?
